Seeds & Plants

Seeds and plants here are a small, focused selection for gardeners with a damp or shady patch to fill. At the moment it’s all candelabra primulas, which bring tiers of bright flowers to spots where many other plants struggle.Candelabra primulas get their name from flowers arranged in rings up a tall stem, and they generally bloom from late spring into early summer. They’re happiest in moist, rich soil with dappled shade, so they suit pond edges, stream banks and boggy borders. You can buy them as plants for quicker results, or as seeds in mixed colours or a single shade like pillar box red. Seeds often need a cold spell before they germinate, so follow the sowing instructions on the packet. Plant in groups for the best effect.See what else is in our garden section.
